Watched this last night. What an amazing way to educate people about some of the lesser known awful things from the WWII days. We have watched the holocaust over and over but how many of us realize what so many innocent European villagers lived and died through? As to the Black history aspect of the film...it was nothing short of brilliant. I am beginning to really love Spike Lee films as there is so much going on. I have seen "Inside Man" about 6 times now and it was fun to see so many of the character actors from that film in this one.

This is a very ambitious, complex and long movie - but it works! The acting is mostly good, despite the scale of the project and the fact that it happens in at least three different languages. Although most of the story is set in Italy in 1944, it flows well between 1980's New York and ties up just about all the loose ends by the finish. I doubt this got any Oscar nominations but compared to a potential winner like "The Dark Knight", this movie is leaps and bounds ahead, if only for the intriguing story line. If you can handle 2 hours and 46 minutes of an actual story, then I can't recommend this movie enough. Some parts are a little gory - not quite on the scale of 'Saving Private Ryan' but bordering on that - this shouldn't put you off though, if you want to watch a well put together movie, with a thoughtful back story and mostly satisfying climax.

I went into this film, not knowing what to expect. I had heard that it was long and boring. Long it may have been, but boring it was not. MIRACLE AT ST. ANNA, to me, is one of the best pictures ever made about World War II. Based on a novel by James McBride, this film tells the story of four Arican-American soldiers in Italy during World War II. One of them has a head of a statue that he found, saying it brings him good luck. This same soldier also takes a little Italian boy with no family and tries to keep him safe. Meanwhile, we see the horrors of the war around them from inside a small Italian village. This is a very powerful film with great performances, beautiful cinematography, exquisite editing, superb sound effects, and plenty of heart-wrenchging moments, along with plenty of hilarious dialogue exchanges. Absolutely amazing!

A great world war 2 movie, with the story of 4 African American soldiers trapped in a Tuscan village in Italy and the relationship that they develop with the villagers. An excellent cast of characters, and worth watching even if it is 2hrs. and 40mins.
