Mighty Fine (2012)

Set in the 1970's, MIGHTY FINE is the story of Joe Fine (Chazz Palminteri) a charismatic, high-spirited man, who relocates his family--wife Stella (Andie MacDowell), a Holocaust survivor, daughters Nathalie (Jodelle Ferland) and Maddie (Rainey Qualley)--from Brooklyn to New Orleans, in search of a better life. Unfortunately, Joe's spending spree is wildly out of touch with reality, as his apparel business is teetering on the brink of collapse, a fact he refuses to accept. Written and directed by Debbie Goodstein, MIGHTY FINE is told from the perspective of an adult Nathalie remembering the events of her youth, and is inspired by Goodstein's memories of her own father. MIGHTY FINE ultimately shows how coming to terms with the past without judgment is the most fruitful way to move toward the future.

This movie really struck a chord with me. I don't think I've ever seen a movie that deals with male rage and anger as honestly (and fairly) at this one. The fact that Chazz makes this guy sympathetic is a testimony to his acting chops. The director got solid performances out of all of her actors but Chazz and the youngest daughter were especially strong. Is it a coincidence that the reviewers who didn't like this movie are men and that reviewers who DID like it are women? Just asking. I am actually going to recommend this movie to my book club. I bet the discussion afterwards is going to be kick ass because I think this issue has touched so many of us at one time or another. A strong recommend.

A somewhat drab and unimaginative telling further dents this dull melodrama of already rather limited psychological insights, and pat conclusions and catharses.

Hard to imagine how a movie can manage to be so underdeveloped yet so depressing at the same time, but "Mighty Fine" manages to pull it off.

We're left with something akin to a Lifetime movie, as there are a number of interesting possibilities, which could have added complexity and depth to the film, that are never fleshed out.

The mood is generally melodramatic and ends as mushy, aided by the soft-focus cinematography that drenches it all in melancholic nostalgia.
