While Nicole Jefferson Asher's script often lapses into romantic melodrama, it also features incisive dialogue and characterization that lift Love Beats Rhymes above its formulaic aspects. RZA's straightforward, gimmick-free direction suits the material well and, not surprisingly, displays a keen sense of milieu.

Coco and Mahlik's scenes are the only ones that seem to take place on earth. Everything else is from some Maya Angelou-inspired Mars.

The script by Nicole Jefferson Asher toggles between sharp observations about wordcraft and some “Dynasty”- or Tyler Perry-level soap operatics. RZA’s direction lacks visual personality, but he keeps the narrative moving and elicits strong performances from his cast.

I really liked it. cute love story amongst individuals and between poetry and hip-hop. great APPEARANCES. great poetry. great rhymes. Common, jill scott, murdamook, the list goes on. i was also kind of impressed with azealia banks performance. this movie reminded of an updated version of love jones; not as grown, but gave me the same feeling.
