Surprisingly gripping and moving modern western.

The pace is deadly slow, the style old-fashioned and the acting devoid of spontaneity. These are skilled actors, but the writing is so threadbare — an important character from the novel has been eliminated — and the direction (by Thomas Bezucha, working from his own adaptation) is so lacking in nuance that genuine dramatic energy gets lost by the wayside during the road trip to North Dakota.

Despite a searing performance from Diane Lane, writer-director Thomas Bezucha’s film ultimately self-immolates.

Kevin Costner and Diane Lane star as grandparents hellbent on rescuing their grandson and daughter-in-law from their abusive family, going to drastic lengths to get them back. And while it has some tense moments, the film proved to be a bit more of a slow burn than I anticipated. Things moved at a snail's pace for the most part for me. The acting from all involved also seemed a little stale to me. Storywise, it felt like nothing I had not already seen before, and despite a tense final act, it was not quite enough to justify the rest of the film or its pace for me, not to mention a resolution that felt a little forced .

Kevin Costner and Diane Lane team up again as a married couple (they played Superman’s parents). This time they’re Montana ranchers, who set out to rescue their young grandson when his mother disappears with her new husband. This starts as a quiet tragedy about grief and loss, but SLOWLY turns into a somewhat frightening thriller, as they discover the truth about their new relatives. Actually, the final few minutes ramp up the friction to “screaming at the screen” levels. The actors are all solid with Lesley Manville creating an especially fearsome smiling matriarch. Director Thomas Bezucha has given the parents plenty of time for interaction, sometimes frustratingly so, but there’s a thread of the couple’s undying love that runs under the underlying sense of malevolence that continually pervades the drama.
