Mesmerisingly detailed, cold and unbiased thriller set around an assassin's efforts to kill Charles De Gaulle and a policeman's efforts to stop him. A brilliant cast also help to make this big screen version of the Frederick Forsyth novel a genuine classic.

Masterpiece. This movie is almost void of melodrama, as the pace, timing, and sense of urgency conjure suspense better than any John Williams score. And remember, if you are going to do assassination for hire, be sure to carry a side-arm on the job. NOTE: I hope everyone understands that the target was the President of France and not the President of the United States.

A classic taut thriller that does justice to Frederick Forsyth's novel, with excellent performances all round, especially Edward Fox as the titular hitman, hired to assassinate French leader General Charles de Gaulle, and Michael Lonsdale as Deputy Commissioner Claude Lebel racing against the clock to stop him. This film should not be confused with the inferior 1997 remake "The Jackal" - but I advise you to watch both movies anyway, in order to compare Edward Fox's meticulous, stone-cold assassin with the formulaic facsmilie portrayed by Bruce Willis in the remake.
