Our times cries this story to be told. There are several brilliant details but on the whole it is nice but the balance of the ingredients seems to be a bit off. For instance the partnership between the main cast seems a bit half boiled.

An uplifting movie that doesn't get caught up in melodrama. I really wish I was fluent French, because I felt like some of the dialogue didn't have the intended impact when reading subtitles.

Quite simply a masterpiece and believe me I've seen a few good classic movies in my time. Do not die without seeing this. I'm waiting to be able to download it to my i-pad so I can watch a bit every day. The character studies are the wonder of it. Such beautifully understated cameos. Believable people. People you are left wanting to know more about - wishing you knew. The cinematography and choices of setting are peerless. Seedy, atmospheric and beautiful. The plot sounds like a cliche maybe but the treatment is original and fresh. It is a delight.

A near-masterpiece. This is the type of film that I imagine Wes Anderson would make if he were a little more mature and slightly less hipster. It is a sweet story that is at times very funny and maybe even poignant. Kaurismaki has crafted a wonderful film and I loved every second of it. For some reason though, it feels slightly insubstantial. It's a great film and very touching, but it doesn't have that profound effect on you as the greatest films do.
