Every time I watch "Mouchette", I find more evidence of a cagy sense of humour. And yet this is one of the bleakest films ever made. Perhaps that's why.

Want to be even more depressed? Bresson's use of sound in the final scene is astonishing in its shock.

Excellent film - superb lead performance and some nice touches from all the lead characters. I especially thought the bumper-cars scene was brilliant

It's a great companion piece to Bresson's ''Au Hasard Balthazar.'' It's just as poignant and heartbreaking. Bresson again reveals the harsh truths of human nature. Must-not-miss.

While Bresson has a tendency to make films that border on (or even cross the border into) egotistical pretentiousness, Mouchette is a film so startling and absolutely tragic that it rises above his shortcomings, and is quite likely the best of the Bresson films I have seen. Amazingly, the child actress Nadine Nortier is possibly the most conventionally convincing actress in all the Bresson films I've seen, and that's possibly what makes it all that more powerful.
