Excellent film - superb lead performance and some nice touches from all the lead characters. I especially thought the bumper-cars scene was brilliant

Mouchette is a very strange individual, but her mother is dying, father is an asshole and brother is just along for the ride. The story lacks character development and dialog. What exactly happened?

bleak, austere but deeply liberating. This film is about redemption but in a very bad way, by suicide? yes it is very pessimistic that the only way to reach the divine grace it is when we are dead because in life we really dont see God anywhere. Bresson put us a happy ending in the context of the film. Surely one the most uncompromising and minimalistic film I have seen. But it is also so emotional and deeply enigmatic work of art, we make the character by ourselves, all it is behind the surface, this is the thing that makes this film so special. Robert Bresson makes this film very magic with a very simple and pure image without great photography or great landscapes or acting, or twisted scripts, only by showing the little things of the human soul and the human suffering. One of the most beautiful films about depression.

One of Bresson's several masterpieces, Mouchette is the tale of a young girl in a French village whose mother is dying and whose father is a feckless alcoholic who is totally disinterested in her welfare. Her isolation is compunded by lack of sympathy from the rest of the village, notably the schoolchildren who make her a pariah. Bresson turns Mouchette into a saint through her suffering, and is considered a companion film to Au Hasard Balthazar (1966), which featured the mistreatment of a donkey by a village. Using non-actors and real locations, it predates the social realism of the Dardenne brothers, and whilst it might sound pretty grim and hard going, it's very absorbing.
