Late Spring (1949)

Noriko is perfectly happy living at home with her widowed father, Shukichi, and has no plans to marry -- that is, until her aunt Masa convinces Shukichi that unless he marries off his 27-year-old daughter soon, she will likely remain alone for the rest of her life. When Noriko resists Masa's matchmaking, Shukichi is forced to deceive his daughter and sacrifice his own happiness to do what he believes is right.

Its heart and heartbreak creep up on you unsuspectingly. What starts out feeling like it will be a charming but forgettable film grows to an immensely touching conclusion. Enchanting performances are bound together with intimate direction and music. A story about a sweet and beautiful daughter who would rather spend her life looking after her father than be married is refreshingly authentic without a hint of corniness or chauvinism. The emotion builds almost flawlessly, culminating in a brilliantly heart-wrenching ending that is, in some sense, a twist, and one that bears that label exceedingly better than most.

I am constantly amazed at how contemporary Ozu's work seems. Late Spring is a must for any film fan, and a terrific companion to Tokyo Story. Once again, the movie stars Chisu Ryu (as the father) and Setsuko Hara as his daughter. The movie weaves the bigger subject of post-war Japan with the initimate subject of a man who is encouraging his daughter to marry, rather than spend her days tending to his needs. It is a story of selfishness versus selflessness, of loneliness versus the Japanese need to be part of a group, even if only a group of two. I ache for Noriko as she tries to cling to her father, and ache for her father who ultimately pushes her out of the nest. The subplot of the romance that Noriko actually could have had is intriguing. In a 21st century setting, she might have chosen to pursue a man to whom she was suited, but in mid-20th century Japan, she did as she was told. Despite the fact that it moves slowly, and has little of the fireworks of a Hollywood or even a Kurasawa film, Late Spring has an elegance all its own.

This has gotta be my favourite of Ozu's films I've seen so far.

What an amazing film. Perfect acting and shot composition. It's deeply affecting as well.

One of many Ozu masterpieces. Late Spring is a story about the love between father and daughter and the realisation that he does not need her to look after him anymore. Subtle, beautiful and emotionally arresting as only Ozu can do.
