Noriko is perfectly happy living at home with her widowed father, Shukichi, and has no plans to marry -- that is, until her aunt Masa convinces Shukichi that unless he marries off his 27-year-old daughter soon, she will likely remain alone for the rest of her life. When Noriko resists Masa's matchmaking, Shukichi is forced to deceive his daughter and sacrifice his own happiness to do what he believes is right.

Ozu is a genius - the first truely modern Japanese filmmaker. This film reduces me to profound tears of sadness.

A poetic, subtle, and graceful look at the relationship of a father and his daughter, who refuses to marry, despite being in her late twenties.

A simple and heartwarming dramedy that is one of Japan's masterpieces. The more Ozu films I watch, the more I am in awe of his calm, collected genius.

This one brought tears to my eyes. So beautifully made and so well-acted. I fear that many of today's film audiences may not have the patience to endure the pace of Ozu's movies nor endure reading subtitles if not fluent in Japanese. I would still advise them to try. This director was a great, great artist.
