Late Spring (2014)

Set in the 1960's. Joo-goo is viewed as Korea's best sculptor, but he suffers from a disease which will slowly paralyze his body. He gives up interests in the arts and just spends his days meaninglessly. His wife, Jung-sook, tries to find a nude model for him, hoping the model might inspire him to sculpt again. One day, Jung-sook meets Min-gyung.

Each Yasujiro Ozu film I've seen is a shining gem of knowledge and infinite wisdom. This is certainly no different.

Note: This masterful, intensely moving picture presents storytelling at its finest. Like finest poetry, it shows you something complex and human in a simple way and yet, leaving a sense of mystery that makes you want to come back to it. ...Remarkable.

My favourite bit: The scene where Noriko and her father attends the noh play and she spots the woman who Noriko thinks her father intends to marry; the mixture of sorrow and jealousy in her eyes as she observes her father's joy... Obviously she thinks it's because he spotted the woman, but really he's just enjoying the play. Beautiful scene, beautiful movie - perhaps Ozu's best.

Another fantastic example of Ozu's work. As usual, very restrianed and very simple. Ozu examines family relationships and the social beliefs of Japan at the time. The struggles of women and the worries of fathers are all played out. Late Spring focuses on Ryu once again playing a single father, and his daughter Noriko. Many of Ozu's films deal with the effects of a marriage on a family. Here, Noriko does not want to get married. She is content with her life with her father. She enjoys looking after her father and worries about he will be able to cope without her. As it progresses Ryu must make the choice of letting his daughter go. Even if he must trick her to set her free. The great thing about Ozu is that he doesn't tell us what to think, a story is laid out in front of us with each characters emotions open to interpretation. A very moving ending, but one that doesn't try and make us cry. Slow and boring to some, Ozu is a director who has no need to try and impress his audience. Ironically, this is the most impressive thing about him.
