Has the look of a John Cassavetes film, but with wimpy, colorless characters and a lot more drugs, death and color.

Review: Against consensus, I applaud this movie for its originality and for its full-tilt rendering of the modern American mid-life crisis. Dynamic performances, textured dialogue, and deft cinematography make for one rather visceral and psychological experience here. Writer Glenn Porter and first time feature helmer Mark Pellington (with the aid of obviously gifted D.P, Eric Schmidt) render an exceedingly grim story with uncompromising cinematic beauty. Jane, Lowe, and Piven boasts impressive performances (particularly in scenes that call for rather severe emotions). I was almost much blown away by what I saw and heard on the screen. Complementing the appropriately raw (deliberately stylized) aesthetic and lugubrious tone is the filmâ(TM)s meticulously integrated soundtrack, harkening to the early 80â(TM)s post punk new wave scene. Although it drags in parts - the movie is too long by 15 minutes - all involved deserve a lot of credit for the successful execution of a structurally and thematically daring film.

These four partying way harder than any 40-something year olds should is not attractive. I did love all of the Big Sur/Monterey scenery and there were some really beautiful lines and moments despite the douchery. The back and forth between the obnoxious and the touching made this a little hard to thoroughly enjoy. It's kind of a colossal mood swing which reminds me a lot of my time in Monterey. Luckily I love a good swing.

Despite the beautiful cinematography, this film left me feeling empty and bewildered. What starts off as a story about middle-aged men beaten down by society and eager to take it easy devolves into the world's most melodramatic and depressing party movie. The movie expects us to care about the bond between the characters without any attempt to build it, instead rushing to destroy their friendship and themselves in the name of a vague, self-righteous pact made years ago. What a waste.
