35 Shots of Rum draws its power from silences, glances, hugs and smiles - all of which speak more eloquently than any dialogue. It's a profound, discreet, hugely touching work that resonates in the memory.

A wonder of minimalism, Claire Denis' 35 Shots of Rum...quietly observes the lives of several Africans living in a Paris suburb.

A good story about a man's relationship with his daughter and those people in their lives around both of them. It was an interesting look into the lives of working class Parisiens. The story was a little confusing at times and I found the film too slow paced for my liking. Lots of lingering shots of train tracks and people talking off their shoes.. Regardless the characters were interesting and worth the visit.

For 20 years, Claire Denis has been among France's foremost filmmakers with her acute yet subtle observations of the ebbs and flows within relationships. Her perception and understanding seem to grow only richer over the years, and her newest film, 35 Shots of Rum, is surely one of her finest -- and thereby one of the best films of the year.

Claire Denis has assembled a simple yet achingly touching little drama. On the surface it looks as if hardly anything's happening, but submit to the gently fluid style and it turns out everything is going on.
