If one considers Ingmar Bergman's "Hour of the Wolf" to be a horror film, which it is with its gothic mood, then it's the best; if one were to compare "Hour of the Wolf" to Mr. Bergman's filmography, "Hour of the Wolf" isn't near his best. Nevertheless, "Hour of the Wolf" is a classic and a curious film from the master of, well, film. Nykvist, Sydow, Ullman, a third act that, on first viewing, surprises, mesmerizes, and always melts the face. Ingmar Bergman's dark tale is psychological horror's Pantheon and has been for over forty years.

The first of three films directed by Ingmar Bergman and starring both Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullman shows a couple descent into hell with the husband going nuts. He starts to hang around a bizarre cult that drives him insane and greatly concerns his wife, who tries to help him out of his predicament and eventually, fails. For me, this ranks as one Bergman's finest, exemplifying superbly acting and black-and-white cinematography, and the second brings in you in so strongly that you, as the viewer, can never get out. Excellent movie and so far the best that I have seen from 1968.

Crawls under me more and more every time I see it. A shocking portrayal of the "mad artist". One of Bergman's best films!

This totally strange, and very disturbing, "horror" film by Ingmar Bergman plays out much like an Edgar Allan Poe tale (that's a good thing, by the way). There's just something about a story set on an isolated island that is inherently scary, so that helps - but besides that this movie really is very scary (beautiful at the same time), just not in any obvious way. The utterly dark world Bergman creates places us right in there with the characters played Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann as they face a series of strange encounters with a group of people (ostensibly human) who live in a sprawling, shadowy mansion on the other side of the island. The work of both actors is phenomenal, and the actors playing the antagonists are all very good at being subtly very frightening. Definitely worth checking out.
