Hold Back the Dawn (1941)

Romanian-French gigolo Georges Iscovescu wishes to enter the USA. Stopped in Mexico by the quota system, he decides to marry an American, then desert her and join his old partner Anita, who's done likewise. But after sweeping teacher Emmy Brown off her feet, he finds her so sweet that love and jealousy endanger his plans.

a superior melodrama way under the radar. charles boyer is highly effective as a gigolo hoping to enter the u.s. by marrying a citizen. enter innocent schoolteacher olivia de havilland. paulette godard is fun as boyer's partner in crime, but their cynical plans soon go awry. most of the film takes place in mexico with lots of local color

Some younger viewers might think this film takes place in the years after the war, but it was actually released a few months before the Pearl Harbor bombing - so it has a certain tension when viewed with this in mind. Thousands of Europeans were fleeing from the war, just as in the film Casablanca which was released 14 months after this film. Also of note is that the movie director we meet early in the film is not just an actor but is actually the credited director of the movie being watched. A very nice touch in adapting a Billy Wilder script.

Easy romantic film with Charles Boyer and Olivia de Havilland (both great). Centered around a gigolo's desire to immigrate to America. Filmed in Mexico. Very enjoyable. How can it be that more than 70 years later and immigration is still a hot topic?

Charles Boyer plays this gigolo ancious to get to the United States and is marooned in a Mexican border town. He tries to meet other women to charm them, and here comes Olivia de Havilland, a teacher from a California town taking a bunch of school children to Mexico, and still somehow gets hooked up with Boyer, alas helping him to get into the US at last, but along the way, things kind of get a bit complicated, and de Havilland believes this marriage is on the level. Paulette Goddard plays another immigrant who plays the same scam and tries to get into partnership with him; real nice sad and sappy melodrama.
