Hercules and the Captive Women (1961)

King Androcles of Thebes commands a ship in search of a threat to Greece, predicted by an atmospheric oracle. Hercules is part of the crew, but the strongman falls overboard in a thick fog. Washed ashore, he saves a young Ismene from Proteus, an evil, shape-shifting creature. Ismene takes Hercules to Atlantis, where he discovers that her mother, Queen Antinea, has captured Androcles. Hercules schemes to rescue him and thwart Antinea's dream of world conquest.

A nadir in Italian sword-and-sandal epics...and boy, that's saying something.

Not a terrible movie, it is pretty slow but its watchable. Reg park ( the main reason i watched it in the first place) plays hercules well and definatly looks the part.

2.5/10. I wasn't expecting Spartacus and sure didn't get it. Badly dubbed, horrendously acted, a really stupid story, cheaply produced, laughably bad dialogue. the score however is occasionally good.

3 stars may seem like a lot for this film, but I really enjoyed it, and it has some good special FX, apart from the Lizard creature that is obviously a man in a suit. The Storm at sea capsizing the boat is one of the best and most realistic storm I've ever seen, made me wonder whether it was an actual storm, maybe it was, or maybe I missed a detail that would have revealed the fake set, they sure fooled me there if it was fake. The direction is quite sharp, it isn't stiff nor amateur, with some fine acting for this genre, and the characters are interesting. The sets of Atlantis are great. The music score is classic, and the location of Atlantis is on a Rocky Island with tall steep rock walls separated by a sandy beach that is very enchanting. And the scenes at sea are real and well photographed. And the story is simple but effective and well directed, a good vs evil classic story. It is a bit slow at times, but otherwise a fun Sword and Sandals movie.
