Not the best Lon Chaney film I've seen. He was great in it, but the movie was not very exciting.

He Who Gets Slapped is probably the best Lon Chaney film. He's mostly famous for his big makeup roles in Hunchback of Notre Dame and Phantom of the Opera, that sometimes people forget that he was an amazing facial actor. As 'He', there is only a layer of paint covering Chaney's face, and he gives an aching and devastating performance.

A very, very sad story, shot in the same vein, emphasizing the evil traits of human nature and its weaknesses towards the misery of the other. The film is backed with the strong Lon Chaney performance who was a true character actor of the silent period. The movie itself is, perhaps, the lesser Sjostrom, comparing to his other features, but still the hand of the master is all too familiar in the handling of morbid and heavy things.

The great Lon Chaney doing what he does best - playing a disgraced scientist who, in order do avoid his shame in the scientific community, becomes a circus clown who's act is simply to get repeatedly slapped (hence the title and, strangely, the character's name!) They certainly don't make 'em like that no more, but Lon made plenty of bizarre gems like this.
