Harakiri (1962)

Down-on-his-luck veteran Tsugumo Hanshirō enters the courtyard of the prosperous House of Iyi. Unemployed, and with no family, he hopes to find a place to commit seppuku—and a worthy second to deliver the coup de grâce in his suicide ritual. The senior counselor for the Iyi clan questions the ronin's resolve and integrity, suspecting Hanshirō of seeking charity rather than an honorable end. What follows is a pair of interlocking stories which lay bare the difference between honor and respect, and promises to examine the legendary foundations of the Samurai code.

A slow movie -- but slow in the good sense, building slowly and relentlessly. The Last Samurai was a glorification of the Samurai tradition. The counterbalance to that is Harakiri, a great "anti-samurai" movie.

"The Wild Bunch" of Samurai Films. Harakiri reveals the hypocrisy and emptiness in the samurai code and that things are not always as they seem. examine justice, revenge, hypocrisy, integrity and the samurai code in the Japanese, samurai culture. In the movie Harakiri, justice and revenge are parallel to each other. It challenges traditional belief of honor and what is to be done and simply not to be done. Kobayashi's direction is masterful, keeping an unbearable suspense during the mostly talky film, handling the touching scenes with care and maturity and giving us a sweeping fight to top all that. Poetic Tragic and beauty easily rivaling even the Great Kurosawa.

An incredible samurai movie from Kobayashi and Nakadai. Like a dark, anti-authoritarian brother to Seven Samurai-- if you're a fan of Japanese cinema, you gotta see this one.

This seemed like a pretty straightforward movie at first, but as the story unfolds, it gets more and more interesting. Some scenes are pretty gut wrenching, no pun intended. Just a great film, you got to see it.

The best samurai movie whose name isn't the Seven Samurai?
