Harakiri (1962)

Down-on-his-luck veteran Tsugumo Hanshirō enters the courtyard of the prosperous House of Iyi. Unemployed, and with no family, he hopes to find a place to commit seppuku—and a worthy second to deliver the coup de grâce in his suicide ritual. The senior counselor for the Iyi clan questions the ronin's resolve and integrity, suspecting Hanshirō of seeking charity rather than an honorable end. What follows is a pair of interlocking stories which lay bare the difference between honor and respect, and promises to examine the legendary foundations of the Samurai code.

Tatsuya Nakadai just *oozes* presence in this, with his malevolent drone of a voice, murderous bug-eyed stare and sinister laugh. This is the role he would perfect 2 years later in 'Sword of Doom'.

Incredible. Just simply incredible. Harakiri is one of the most bad-ass movies I've seen while at the same time so strikingly provocative on both an intellectual and emotional level without stifling either message. Extremely well balanced, a must-see in the ole life.

An incredible samurai movie from Kobayashi and Nakadai. Like a dark, anti-authoritarian brother to Seven Samurai-- if you're a fan of Japanese cinema, you gotta see this one.

Tatsuya Nakadai is my favorite japanese actor and if you watch this film you will see why. This is easily one of his best performances. The acting is top notch,great samurai story filled with surprises, and a great score. Overall a perfect movie. Be warned if you have a weak stomach.. there is a lot of gruesome scenes in this film.
