The daughter of a daimyo, one forced to commit harakiri to secure her a future to choose her own destiny, falls in love with and marries a European officer. The officer returns to Europe but promises to come back for her and his new child, but when he comes back to Japan, he brings his European wife.

It is extremely intense emotionally as well as dramatically tragic movie based on the beliefs of the samurai... very very intense... not for the light hearted...

This is a great Japanese film. If you can sit through the subtitles, you should check this film out.

This is the most moving samurai film I have ever seen as well as visually stunning. It demonstrates the fault of adhering unwaveringly to a social more.

Quintessential samurai movie, though with barely any swordplay. The moral debate that shapes the story left me with a lot to think about, esp. as I gauged my shifting reactions to the characters as the plot unspooled.
