Harakiri (1919)

The daughter of a daimyo, one forced to commit harakiri to secure her a future to choose her own destiny, falls in love with and marries a European officer. The officer returns to Europe but promises to come back for her and his new child, but when he comes back to Japan, he brings his European wife.

Quintessential samurai movie, though with barely any swordplay. The moral debate that shapes the story left me with a lot to think about, esp. as I gauged my shifting reactions to the characters as the plot unspooled.

An incredible samurai movie from Kobayashi and Nakadai. Like a dark, anti-authoritarian brother to Seven Samurai-- if you're a fan of Japanese cinema, you gotta see this one.

Kobayashi's a genius. Taut and absolutely gripping. I don't like to use the term loosely, but this film merits the accolade of "masterpiece". Hardly a surprise considering the talent gathered to make it, from Tatsuya Nakadai in the leading role to Shinobu Hashimoto's screenplay to Takemitsu's score.
