The daughter of a daimyo, one forced to commit harakiri to secure her a future to choose her own destiny, falls in love with and marries a European officer. The officer returns to Europe but promises to come back for her and his new child, but when he comes back to Japan, he brings his European wife.

I think this is one of the most perfect film I have seen in a long time. Aside from starting off with ridiculous beauty, the story unfolds perfectly and slowly with an incredible message about honor and character. Amazing. Watch it.

Masaki Kobayashi's tale of samurai squalor, brings more emotion and depth to the time period. Not to mention the unbelievable performance by a younger Tatsuya Nakadai. Kobayashi's treatise on the inadequacies of tradition, as well as the hypocrisy of higher society are center stage here. Through the perfect use of all cinematic elements, Kobayashi brings us a Samurai period film that is, in fact, timeless. Flawless.

Tatsuya Nakadai just *oozes* presence in this, with his malevolent drone of a voice, murderous bug-eyed stare and sinister laugh. This is the role he would perfect 2 years later in 'Sword of Doom'.
