In 1914, a cruise ship sets sail from Naples to spread the ashes of beloved opera singer Edmea Tetua near Erimo, the isle of her birth. During the voyage, the eclectic array of passengers discovers a group of Serbian refugees aboard the vessel. Peace and camaraderie abound until the ship is descended upon by an Austrian flagship. The Serbians are forced to board it, but naturally they resist, igniting a skirmish that ends in destruction.

Fellini's final masterpiece is a magical, nostalgic look at memories, families and lovers. Part dream, part fantasy, an elegant farewell.

Absolutely beautiful and lovely. The overly obvious sets, the toy-like atmosphere and a group of people with no care except their own and their final realization that beauty is so much more, it is even among the poor in us and these film is not just a joyful fantasy, but a bash at stereotypes done elegantly, particularly the blind sister of the Grand Duke and also a humanistic movie of looking at the world for more than it is. A beautiful moment from a superb human being.

A bizarre and absurd tale of a 1914 luxury liner and it's aristocratic passengers voyage from Italy to scatter the ashes of the famed opera singer Tetua. This film is very much in the vein of "Amarcord" with it's collage of strange and entertaining characters, all interacting within a rather dreamlike and romantic setting.

One of the most pleasant Fellini films ever. By this time the style that began in 8 1/2 had become a good memory for Fellini. I say that because this story is so simple, so imaginative and so friendly. His ambition isn't to out due what he did, but to make good on the best features of his filmmaking. The story, set on a luxury liner, is about a memorable bunch of odd passengers and a lovesick elephant! The tone is quircky. Even the ocean is fabricated to set the perfect mood. Wes Anderson makes films these days about similar characters, but can't paint a picture of them without a chuckle at their expense. Fellini loves the characters. We should be grateful for that.
