Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973)

Inventor Goro Ibuki creates a humanoid robot named Jet Jaguar. It is soon seized by an undersea race of people called the Seatopians. Using Jet Jaguar as a guide, the Seatopians send Megalon as vengeance for the nuclear tests that have devastated their society.

This time its a tag team match between Godzilla and Jet Jaguar versus Megalon and Gigan. For those who don't know the legendary Jet Jaguar he is a robot that can be the size of a human and grow to the size of Godzilla and he even has his own song! Megalon is a giant beetle that can drill underground and spit bombs out of his mouth. Nothing much to say about this film. It was another made for children movie but I think any body would enjoy this especially for a good laugh like some of the other Godzilla entries.

Godzilla vs His All-Time Low! Widely panned by just about everybody, this movie features the return of Gigan and the debut (and finale) of the giant bug-roach-beetle-drill-thing called Megalon. It's a strange mixture of the widely popular Japanese hero shows of the time and the widespread destruction of Godzilla, with more tendency towards the hero shows. There's even a requisite annoying child-mary-sue character, whose irritating dubbed voice pierced the eardrums of many frustrated viewers. It's definitely a must-see for B-movie fans, especially for Godzilla's phsyics-defying martial arts maneuvers. And for the Jet Jaguar song.

I love Godzilla and all of his movies but chose this one to review. It features one of the more wacky of Godzilla's adversaries, Megalon a giant..what?...from the subterranean kingdom of Seatopia. Godzilla also has an ally in Jet Jaguar, a robot. Apart from the crazy fight scenes (check out Godzilla's flying drop kick on Megalon near the end) there is some groovy, jazzy music and some awesome dialgoue.

Not the greatest of Godzilla movies. For starters, he's barely even in this. Megalon is essentially a giant cyborg cockroach. While he's tough, he's consistently upstaged by kaiju partner Gigan. The true star is an Ultraman style robot named Jet Jaguar. On the plus side, Jet is at least a fun character. It's way too geared towards kids and has incredibly forgettable human characters. Its still worth watching, for those who are already Godzilla fans. However, it fails to match several other entries in the series.
