Fort Apache (1948)

Owen Thursday sees his new posting to the desolate Fort Apache as a chance to claim the military honour which he believes is rightfully his. Arrogant, obsessed with military form and ultimately self-destructive, he attempts to destroy the Apache chief Cochise after luring him across the border from Mexico, against the advice of his subordinates.

John Ford's 'cavalry' trilogy is not the most inspiring series of films imaginable. Taken out of context, this will be entirely forgettable to a modern audience.

John Ford's directing brilliance is slammed in our face again in this glorious depiction of a United States Cavalry. The magnificent landscapes of Monument Valley are in full swing and Ford's characters are as always very interesting and conflicted. Henry Fonda and John Wayne play the perfect contrasting characters, and Ford's supporting cast such as Ward Bond and Shirley Temple are well chosen. I also must admit I had a bit of a laughing fit when one of the new recruits tries to mount a bare backed horse and gets launched over the beast. It's a very Buster Keatonesque moment.

John Ford and John Wayne, whoop-de-fuckin-doo. I actually didn't hate this as much as I expected to. Wayne is a far more likeable character than usual, a just and reasonable man without all the macho dick-swinging. And the story is mostly engaging and touches on compelling themes of honor. But the film is still buried in those Ford-isms that bug me so much, and my stomach clenched when Wayne gives his little speech at the end, with "Battle Hymn of the Republic" swelling in the background. So while I enjoyed it more than most Ford/Wayne movies, I didn't enjoy it enough to want to see it ever again.

I found this be kind of different kind of early western. The indians aren't made to be evil people. Fonda outshines John Wayne in a role that seems to be channeling Custer in his stubborness.

John Ford at his best, well served by a very well written script.
