John Wayne is Hondo, a despatch rider who befriends a deserted rancher and her son, who are threatened by an Apache uprising. A shadow falls over the relationship when Hondo later kills her errant husband in self defence. A superior western, perhaps a little too low key to be a true classic, but very watchable. The side-plot involving Apache chief Vittorio is handled pretty sensitively for the time.

Enjoyable "Shane" variation has the usual Wayne charisma, plus a strong performance from newcomer Geraldine Page. Script tries to make Hondo sympathetic to the Native American way of life, but protracted battle (with dozens of warpainted extras getting shot) undermines this considerably. Play 'spot the 3D staging' as you watch!

Just got the BD. Unjustly obscure due to distribution rights issues. It's not "The Searchers", but what is? A great film for Dads to watch with their families.
