From the sight of a police officer this movie depicts the life in New York's infamous South Bronx. In the center is "Fort Apache", as the officers call their police station, which really seems like an outpost in enemy's country. The story follows officer Murphy, who seems to be a tough cynic, but in truth he's a moralist with a sense for justice.

A tough-talking street melodrama, both shocking and sorrowful, acted by Paul Newman and a huge cast with the kind of conviction that can't be ignored.

a pretty good movie. for me though this movie just couldn't strike the right tone. i has the elements to be a good cop drama but they seem to want to put "buddy cop" elements that sabotage the drama. and some characters show a lot of potential but we never get past the surface. overall: uneven. there are obvious parallels to the 1948 john ford western "fort apache" which is cool if you're a film buff. sociologically/historically it's interesting for this snapshot of the south bronx circa 1981.

I don't know what to say. I've just finished watching this. It's the best cop movie I've ever seen. There are some great performances, (Paul Newman stands out, but then he would), but the star of the movie's got to be the Bronx. It's the setting that makes it, not the actors, the plot or even the action - and there's plenty of that. The ending? Ohhhhhh . . . . son of a *bitch*. Worth anybody's time.
