It's hard for people to imagine that confederate soldiers were humans with complex loyalties and motivations. And, God forbid, that many white people fought for a cause to which they didn't subscribe...yet still fought, for their fellow soldiers and their families and a host of other reasons. Life is messy. This film is complimentary, not anathema, to the realities of the Civil War.

The war scenes and their aftermath are involving and emotionally sound as well as skillfully shot and edited. And if several moments smack of revisionist history, perhaps best to ascribe them to dramatic license.

This film tries very hard to portray a story sympathetic to Confederate soldiers while doing its very best to condemn what they were fighting for. And it fails miserably. The film makers go to great pains to say slavery is wrong and have the characters say and do things that no southerner would ever do. (Slavery is bad, we must intervene to save the slave baker who's about to be hanged for stealing the bread that we stole). And in the one place where a Confederate flag would be appropriate--in the portrayal of a Civil War battle--it's nowhere to be seen. It's one thing to be blatantly racist, but this movie sanitizes the VMI cadets beyond recognition.
