Seasoned adventurer and treasure hunter Dirk Pitt, a former Navy SEAL, sets out for the African desert with his wisecracking buddy Al in search of a confederate ironclad battleship rumored to have vanished long ago, the main draw being the treasure supposedly hidden within the lost vessel. When the daring duo come across Dr. Eva Rojas, a beautiful scientist who is juggling an escape from a warlord and a mission to stop the spread of a powerful plague, their desert expedition begins to heat up.

Sahara is a mediocrity wrapped inside a banality, toasted in a nice, fresh cliche.

Saddled with more industry/celebrity baggage than a high-class safari voyage, Sahara is a rousing and only occasionally ridiculous adventure yarn.

This movie had the budget to be great, but was sorely miscast. I saw an interview with Mat saying he pushed for the rights to make it. So I guess he thought of himself as Dirk. Which he isn't! And then I guess Mat wanted so much money to pretend to be Dirk all he could afford for Al, was Steve. WTF! It's like no one read the book! Steve is NO Al! Not in any way! This mess was ego driven and Mat should be held accountable for ruining a product that should have set the wheels in motion for many of Clive's books getting to the screen.

The professional reviews get this correctly, I believe. Note the mixtures of pluses and minuses. Unlike many failed Indiana Jones movies, this one has a substantial plot. For pandemic-lockdown TV it's good. As a checklist of how movie execs in suits imagining and approving plot points, it tells the story of where these films go off the rails, despite so many positives. It's more about making a blockbuster than about telling a story with characters you care about. From a writing point of view by Chicago Tribune's Robert K. Elder this review shines for me: Action films can't be this consistently absurd, can't paint their heroes into such dangerous corners, from which only cocktails of luck and divine intervention can save them, over and over. It's a bad-faith bargain with the audience and bad storytelling [that the best of the Bond films understand must be avoided]. This is more like the Roger Moore Bond films played for laughs with big budgets.

The casting is so strong and the overall filmmaking flair of the movie is so captivating that it basically works.
