The Birth of a Nation (1915)

Two families, abolitionist Northerners the Stonemans and Southern landowners the Camerons, intertwine. When Confederate colonel Ben Cameron is captured in battle, nurse Elsie Stoneman petitions for his pardon. In Reconstruction-era South Carolina, Cameron founds the Ku Klux Klan, battling Elsie's congressman father and his African-American protégé, Silas Lynch.

An excellent of portrait of American Politics at the turn of the 20th Century, and revolutionary filming techniques that has defined movies ever since.

It's ugly, abhorrently racist message fails to cloud the artistic and technical merits of the picture, which paved the way for motion picture due to it's groundbreaking production with impressively staged action scenes, melodramatic performances and innovative, pioneering camera techniques that are still utilised by film-makers today.

[b]VHS [/b]Second Viewing, 1 Griffith film seen Even though the initial shock of [i]The Birth of a Nation [/i]is gone, the technical merits the film boasts still can't be ignored. Sure there is something strange about the KKK coming to save the day, but how Griffith pieces together shots to form a coherent scene started it all. It was the first blockbuster and historical feature film.

An accomplished and mature film that revolutionazed the movie industry forever. Astonishing direction, editing, musical score, etc. So much has been said about this legendary picture. The one who wants to really appreciate the importance of this movie should deepen into the historic context surrounding the creation of this movie. It is the most important movie in the cinema history.
