The Keeping Room (2014)

In this radically reimagined American Western set towards the end of the Civil War, Southerner Augusta encounters two renegade, drunken soldiers who are on a mission of pillage and violence. After escaping an attempted assault, Augusta races back to the isolated farmhouse that she shares with her sister Louise and their female slave Mad. When the pair of soldiers track Augusta down intent on exacting revenge, the trio of women are forced to take up arms to fend off their assailants, finding ways to resourcefully defend their home––and themselves––as the escalating attacks become more unpredictable and relentless.

It's not without flaws and there are things in the film that didn't need to be in, but overall "The Keeping Room" is a solidly made feminist drama with committed performances.

Sean Burns 23 Sep 2015

It's an exceedingly difficult movie to sit through, and offers little reward for doing so.

Marshall Fine 22 Sep 2015

Barber keeps the atmospherics at full pitch, which tends to draw out the action but undermine the tension. The violence can be brutal at times, but it's seldom dramatic.

Allan Hunter 18 Jun 2016

A handsomely crafted, slowburning tale that tries a little too hard to place its political themes at the forefront of the action.

Wendy Ide 18 Jun 2016

The term "revisionist western" has been overused lately. However, this blend of slow-burning frontier feminism and taut home invasion thriller is probably the most authentically unorthodox take on the genre you will see for a while.
