Fat City (1972)

The story of two men, a veteran boxer who is down and out, and a young man who is just starting his life and boxing career. Their fighting careers cross paths as their lives and fortunes head in opposite directions. Director John Huston tells their stories with a level, unsentimental honesty and makes it into one of his best films.

John Huston's masterpiece- and one of my all-time favourites. Haunting, gritty, and profoundly moving. There is so much life and poetry in this movie. And that ending!

Fat City is the type of movie that makes you feel weird after you watch it. On the DVD case it says, "life is what happens inbetween rounds." I'd say thats pretty descriptive of the movie because it looks like it is about boxing but that is only a secondary aspect of the movie. The main character is a guy who was once a decent boxer but has since become an alcoholic. He meets a woman at a bar who is also an alcoholic and his focus shifts to her. Susan Tyrell plays said alcoholic female and this is my favorite female performance of all time. I think it's interesting that she is just as self destructive as he is but at the same time she is smart enough to realize that it isn't a good thing for them to be together. I think its a good portrayal of how feminism should be shown...Not a douche-y, one-sided, pride-driven argument but a complex statement that portrays women as complicated/important characters.

John Huston's 1972 restatement of his theme of perpetual loss is intelligently understated.

The quintessential statement on squandered potential.

A very good drama about a boxer making a come back into the ring and his relationship with an alcoholic girlfriend. Very good performance by Stacey Keach but the best performance was by Susan Tyrell as Oma, an alcoholic. She was nominated for an Academy Award for best actress in a supporting role.
