The perfect film, in my eyes. Funny, edgy and just a good down-to-earth hard boiled detective story. Gould was cast perfectly. Also, is there ever a scene where Gould is not smoking? Also, did they parody Hemingway?

This is the ultimate Altman movie. It reimagines the noir detective film with a hipster logic. Once you see it, you'll not be able to take Bogart's Marlowe seriously again. This depiction is so subversive and intuitively right! And no-one could have played Marlowe like Elliott Gould. A wonderful movie of audacious imagination and intellect. It will leave you giddy with excitement at the reckless risks the moviemakers took and brought off.

Elliott Gould walks around confused and gets hit a lot. A+++

Elliott Gould is the balls. This movie is so good it'll make your face melt. Next time you see one of the Ocean's movies and go "who's the old gay dude?", watch this movie and you'll go "Oh, it's the fucking BADDEST MOTHERFUCKER on the planet, that's who."

Through its casual, understated, "homage-to-L.A." style, Altman's film draws in the patient viewer who can appreciate what he's being presented. Gould is similarly casual as he maneuvers the serio-comic central role through the film's landscape of seedy bars, misfit characters, and palpable tension. In my opinion, the film is amazing: one of the best examples of the small, unique, "this is my little movie" movies.
