Dreamchild (1985)

80-year-old Alice Hargreaves is about to visit Columbia University to attend a reception in honour of author Lewis Carroll. As a child, Alice's close friendship with the writer was the creative catalyst for Carroll's most beloved work. However, as Alice reflects on her experiences with the author, she slowly realises the complexity of their bond has had lasting, deeply felt ramifications.

Superb, Dennis Potter written story of the real Alice from 'Wonderland'. The best use of Jim Henson's puppets I have ever seen.

I saw the film when it opened and later rented it on VHS (not available on DVD yet.) A beautiful and heart wrenching film. Ian Holm as "Lewis Carroll" was sadly overlooked by the Oscars that year. The Muppet/Puppet scenes may strike modern audiences as a bit odd, but they add more charm and realism than CG could. One not to miss if/when it is ever shown. Send requests in to TCM.

Totally forgotten, barely available movie about the power of sex, imagination, memory, and death -- this is a kind of movie that probably wouldn't be made nowadays, because Carroll's infatuation with the little girl would be labeled as too racy. It's a movie for those with open minds and those who cherish poetry. Catch it if you can! (PS. Jim Henson's Workshop provided all the scary creatures Alice meets in wonderland)

This is a bold film depicting the mysterious relationship between Lewis Carroll and Alice Lidell (who inspired Alice in Wonderland). It is based on the historical event of Mrs. Alice Hargreeves (the elderly Alice Lidell) arriving for the first time on American soil to receive an honorary degree from Columbia University for the centenary of Rev. Dodgeson's (Lewis Carroll) birth. She confronts the suppressed memories of her strange childhood with Carroll through somewhat disturbing and nightmarish sequences with the help of Jim Henson's Creature Shop. It is by no means a light-hearted children's story with cute characters. It is also a film that could not be made today because of the subtle tones of pedophilia. Can you decide... was Carroll a perv or a loving friend? Maybe it isn't up to you.

I don't know, there was just something about this movie that was so captivating, and yet looking back on the movie, it was't a very interesting story at all. That it just a testament to the power tyhat good directing and music has. It tugs at your heartstrings when you see Lewis Carroll with Alice, but then you realize, wait: He's 50 and she's like 7. But it was beautifully made.
