This is not the best of Jacques Demy's movies - but it is definitely the most warped: a fairy tale about incest, taxidermy , cake and true love. It again stars Catherine Deneuve - at her most enchanting - and again absurd romance is used to unsettling effect. A retelling of Cinderella, but Prince Charming is a petulant brat with an overprotective mother; Cinderella is a princess who has run away to avoid marrying her father; the fairy godmother has schemes of her own (this is no altruistic fairy!); and the childrenâ??s ambiguous relationships with their parents might explain their obsession with true romance. Once again the sumptuous costumes, non-naturalistic colour design (this time with the extras literally painted blue and red) and amazing sets give it Demyâ??s distinctive look, and there are some stylish French touches.

Que dire de ce film? Le chef d'oeuvre de Jacques Demy. La musique de Michel Legrand est extra. Ce film est beau, ce film est parfait, ce film est plein de trouvailles (l'helicoptere est un vrai coup de gÃ©nie!). J'ai beau le voir et le revoir je n'y trouve aucun defaut. Chaque fois que je le regarde je pleure toujours autant quand Peau d'ane et le prince se retrouvent dans leur rÃ?Âªve et se mettent Ã?Â chanter en se roulant dans l'herbe, je suis toujours aussi jalouse de Catherine Deneuve et je suis entiÃ?Â¨rement sous le charme de Jacques Perrin. Si je pouvais je mettrais encore plus d'etoiles. Peau d'ane aÂ jamais dans mon coeur...

Watched it, found it entirely enchanting, put the DVD in the mailbox and then napped for 5 hours. It is, at the same time, simple fun and entirely poignant. The interviews in the DVD extra are just....joyously odd.

Who else but Jacques Demy was making unabashed fairy tales in 1970? And who better to be the princess than Catherine Deneuve? Legendary actors Jean Marais (the grief-addled king who wants to marry his daughter) and Delphine Seyrig (fairy godmother) round out the cast; Michel Legrand contributes the odd score. As with other Demy films, the colors are vibrant and take on a life of their own alongside lyrical moments such as Deneuve running slo-mo through the forest covered in donkey skin, and the singing of some of the dialog all create a dreamlike texture. While the project lacks the overall sparkle of Umbrellas of Cherbourg, you should still see it at your next Cinderella-themed party. (By the way, the Flixster / Facebook programmers should work on diacritics display - the film is not "Peau d'acne" !)
