A leading cast to die for: Deneauve, Jean Marais and Delphine Seyrig, who realises that a campy performance is a guaranteed scene-stealer! The film is a variant on the Cinderella story (by the same author), and seemingly set within a Medieval France: however wily Demy pulls the rug from under our feet within the final scene! Some charming songs to match Disney's Sherman brothers of the same period, yet the racy narrative touches on incest - something Uncle Walt would never dream of, reminding us that all fairy tales contain a dark core. Demy however, coats his musical confection with fairy dust and a light humour, incorporating a delicious-sounding recipe song, to match Snow White's "Whistle While You Work". Far too good for the children!

Quand le conte de fees prend corps, il faut Jacques Demy pour y croire. Meme l'helicoptere ne gene pas, ou alors c'est que l'on a rien compris a la fee des Lilas...

Jacques Demy is so camp that it sometimes makes my eyes vomit. That being said, i love the pain! This is an over-saturated, over-the-top, quite literal interpretation of an old European fairy tale. There is a donkey that shits gold and jewels = A+ for Jelisy. For the king's white lion throne, alone - i give it four stars. It is a film for any kid [or 'person'] who doesn't want to marry their father.

at the beginning, i thought, "oh my god. what have i gotten myself into now?" only later, as the story started to unfold, did i realise that this was no ordinary fairy tale! outrageous to the point of hilarity, it serves its satirical purpose very, very well.
