Dead Ringers (1988)

Elliot, a successful gynecologist, works at the same practice as his identical twin, Beverly. Elliot is attracted to many of his patients and has affairs with them. When he inevitably loses interest, he will give the woman over to Beverly, the meeker of the two, without the woman knowing the difference. Beverly falls hard for one of the patients, Claire, but when she inadvertently deceives him, he slips into a state of madness.

a movie that made me appreciate the fact that I don't have a twin nor am I a gynecologist.

Possibly Cronenberg's best film and Irons' best acting performance. The use of color and subdued, yet stylized, production design serve to create an other-worldly sensibility, the shared reality of the Mantle brothers. Especially evocative are the scenes in their operating room, wearing scrubs that are vaguely reminiscent of priestly robes. Red, of course. There's the story too, a brilliant tale of twins and their love for each other, their shared descent into madness. Cronenberg manages to explore sex and violence w/o his more blatant imagery. It's a very effective film, though it might be too "weird" for some.

Strong. Amazing. and amazingly strong! Jeremy Irons gives a supreb performance. well, 2 performances actually... and of course Cronenberg once again proves that he knows how to make a good movie. cool. creepy. emotional.

Disturbing and hallucinatory descent into perversion, drug abuse and madness, marked by Irons' startling double role. As the Mantle twins fragment under pressure from the contradictions inherent in their vicarious, incestuous relationship, Cronenberg's vision becomes progressively bleaker and more unsettling, reminiscent of his darkest and most affecting early works such as The Brood and Videodrome. Simply overwhelming.
