Despite the fancy trappings laid on by the respected old producer-director team of Michael Relph and Basil Dearden, this handsomely colored exercise is the kind of pseudo-Victorian nonsense that Alfred Hitchcock long ago laid to rest.

Gina Lollobrigida is a woman torn between greed and compassion in this mildly compelling 'thriller' from British director Basil Deardon. If you can withstand the slow start the payoff at the end is... well... modest.

Hardly a feather in the cap of anyone involved, the film starts out well enough, but the last half degenerates into complete implausibility.

Somewhat overwrought sudser is aided by gorgeous location filming and a superior cast. Ralph Richardson is wonderful as the old codger, Gina full of fire and Sean Connery suave and silky in an atypical role. Not great cinema but fun in a melodramatic way.

Acquired a copy recently. It's not been released on DVD. Grew up with this film so a bit of a trip back to see how it looks now. I guess Ralph Richardson's character is just a bit too unbelievable, and his treatment of his servants is probably the reason why this title is conveniently forgotten. Connery is just in Bond mode when we know how good he really is. Lollobrigida just undresses down to underwear at every opportunity - this is not a criticism. Still, it's entertaining, only the Spain sequences age the film.
