In after the isolationist The Lost Weekend, but none the less gripping portrayal of a family torn apart from the preternatural dependence and resulting madness of alcoholism. It uses humor in a sly way (as only Blake Edwards can) to cut even deeper with its drama.

Oh my God. This is one of the most moving, compelling and tragically sad movies ever made. The story is wonderful, the the acting is superb, and I can't watch it often enough. Get the tissues.

A movie that shows the devastation alcohol can cause in ones life and relationships. It was so sad. Though it's old it touches me each time I watch it. Heartbreaking story.

its movies like this that make jack lemmon one of my favorite actors of all time. what a performance. at the time this had to be a risk for lemmon becuase he was mostly known for comedy's. blake edwards does a magnificent job with the camera in this one and lee remick give a solid performance as well. i loved the music in this movie, it really set a tone.
