i think that this movie was equal parts darkness and intrigue...I loved it

Wine merchant Alex Gates seems to have it all: a fancy shop, a beautiful wife, Suzanne, a sexy Latin mistress, Gabriella, and a hot car. He enjoys the best vintages of the goods he sells. In truth, Alex Gates' finances are stretched to the limit, his marriage is in a shambles and his relationship with his stepson Jason is toxic. Alex's business caters to a wealthy clientele, whose riches prove all too seductive: particularly a certain $1 million diamond necklace. Alex joins with Victor Spanksy, an emphysemic safe-cracker, in a conspiracy to steal the necklace. Rather than the key to their freedom, the hot necklace proves to be the beginning of the end. While Alex is seduced by the jewels, his stepson is both sucked into the crime and drawn to Gabriella, unaware of her liaisons with his stepfather. As their passion grows, she is increasingly torn by the two of them, and by the temptations of money and love.

Jack Nicholson and Judy Davis have an unhappy marriage. He is running a failing wine store financed by a mortgage on her house and sleeping with Jennifer Lopez. She drinks way too much. He has teamed up with aging, fatally ill professional thief Michael Caine to rob the house of one of his clients. They steal a million dollar diamond necklace, and as Nicholson is packing to fly to New York and fence it, he fights with Davis and she clocks him across the head with her cane. She grabs a suitcase and runs, inadvertently taking the necklace with her. She goes into hiding with Stephen Dorff, her son from her first marriage, while Nicholson tries to find them while holding off an increasingly agitated and violent Caine. This 6th collaboration between Bob Rafelson and Nicholson is a really spiffy little modern noir that mainly suffers from having the amazingly mediocre Dorff in a very prominent role. The actors surrounding him are wonderful, especially Caine who brings a nice balance of patheticness and ferocity to his character.

So-so neo film noir. Nicholson, Dorff, Lopez and Davis are all good but Caine steals every scene he's in. Worth seeing just for his work.
