If the story were as compelling as it should be, we would have wept over the injustice of it all and unfortunately, that didn't happen.

61/100. This film is best known for introducing Gregory peck to the world in his film debut. It's a rather awkward World War II propaganda film, it's goal being to rally support of Americans toward our Allies, namely Russia. It is interesting for it's historical perspective, but it is too obvious and too melodramatic. It is moving and has a good production.

None of it is any nearer the Russian war than the lobby of an "art" movie theater.

this practically unseen tourneur must have gotten buried during the cold war. featuring tourneur's biggest budget, immediately after the success of 'cat people', it's gripping and suspenseful, with great characterizations. gregory peck's debut opposite the 'black pearl' of the russian ballet, tamara toumanova, features a bit too much speechifying but it's a wonderful bit of propaganda all the same

Before the Russians were considered dirty commies by Hollywood, they were salt-of-the-earth freedom fighters, taking on the Nazis, lead by Gregory Peck in his film debut. Jacques Tourneur is somewhat of an underrated director, but this film is not among his best. Still, it's not a bad film. My main complaint is that the pace seems unnecessarily slow in places, but Tourneur manages to deliver several memorable and visually striking sequences. Worth watching, but far from a classic.
