Sophie's Choice (1982)

Stingo, a young writer, moves to Brooklyn in 1947 to begin work on his first novel. As he becomes friendly with Sophie and her lover Nathan, he learns that she is a Holocaust survivor. Flashbacks reveal her harrowing story, from pre-war prosperity to Auschwitz. In the present, Sophie and Nathan's relationship increasingly unravels as Stingo grows closer to Sophie and Nathan's fragile mental state becomes ever more apparent.

Strong performance from Meryl Streep. I became a strong fan of hers since then.

not a tear jerker like Schindlers List but still worth watching

It is an excellent movie, a clasic, not to mention the exceptional performance of Maryl Streep. It is heartbreaking, emotional and the plot catches you from the start. Amazing film.

This is an epic movie. Full of sadness and cruel fate, I couldn't stop watching it till the very last minute.

Meryl Streep is one of the greatest living actresses of her day, which is today ;-). And this movie is proof she is. Now she isn't the greatest IMO, but in this movie she shines like a candle in the wind. Streep is Sophie- who is happy,sad, angry, comedic, and tragic at the same time. You want to see Streep before The Devil Wears Prada? Watch this and you will see why one Oscar is enough.
