Sophie's Choice (1982)

Stingo, a young writer, moves to Brooklyn in 1947 to begin work on his first novel. As he becomes friendly with Sophie and her lover Nathan, he learns that she is a Holocaust survivor. Flashbacks reveal her harrowing story, from pre-war prosperity to Auschwitz. In the present, Sophie and Nathan's relationship increasingly unravels as Stingo grows closer to Sophie and Nathan's fragile mental state becomes ever more apparent.

I saw this film over the weekend for the second time, I originally saw it when it first came out ( yes, I'm that old ) I was so traumatized by the film, that I quickly bought the book by Styron, upon which the film was based on. Of course the book went on into deeper details not shown in film that left me more disturbed than ever. 30 years later after the film first came out, as history always repeats itself, we are still experiencing human cruelty against each other and it seems to be getting worst and worst and from the news I'm reading right now, tomorrow is only looking bleaker. The only thing that gives me hope is Emily Dickinson's poem, which I had forgotten it was in the film "Ample Make This Bed". Animals don't do these horrible things to each other, except for the Darwin's reason for survival, so why do we keep doing it to each other?

Of all the movies that depict the horrors of Nazi Germany, this is the one that haunts me the most. The story unfolds perfectly. Best to see before you have kids.

This is a film so devestatingly brilliant with an iconic performance from the great Meryl Streep. What made "Sophie's Choice" such a great film is that it could have come off as manipulative and maudlin, but director Alan J. Pakula, and Meryl Streep's performance make this film feel so honest and so real.

this is one of the most depressing, yet amazing movies i have ever seen. Meryl is completely perfect in every way, and she and Kevin Kline make an amazing couple. However, the little southern writer bugs me, but it doesn't stop it from being one of the greatest movies ever.
