One of the most important war films ever made and definitely one of the best filmed and best acted. For once, a film that recognises that there were non-Americans in WWII, so conspicuously absent from jingoistic historical trash like Saving Private Ryan. And they really did have one-armed African soliders - the French took anyone they could get. To think that even the actors didn't know about the mistreatment of African conscripts before they made this film just adds to the subtle tragedy. A stern but beautifully delivered message to countless French governments that have used colonial workers as canon fodder for the last 60 years, while they are more French than FN nationalists wil ever be. A lot of French people I've heard don't like this film, not becuase it's badbly made, not because it's untrue, but because they think it's anti-French. They should grow up.

Fantastic and powerful. The French really do lead the way in dramatic movie making. Don't expect big battle scenes, but do expect injustice.

This was a very moving tale. It follows the story of the forgotten soldiers of WWII. Every country had them and the struggles of North African's fighting in the French army are poetically showm in this movie. The movie is especially touching when you thing of French history and what would happen after the war. These men gave their lives for France thinking they were fighting for freedom and they were only it was not their own. I got so angry during certain points ini the film I just wanted to scream. Equality is a never ending battle so I am glad that this movie was made. It reminds us that we are all human and have the same hopes and dreams. So why do we insist in dividing ourselves?
