Not quite 'Das Boot' but certainly ranks among the very best Submarine movies. This is in no small part to the two excellent leads, Mitchum and Jurgens who play war-weary Destroyer Captain and U-boat commander respectively. Anti-Nazi, anti-war and surprisingly graphic for the time - a must see war movie for film-lovers.

Post Ww 2 war movie with an attempt to rehab the germans as honorable warriors. Instead of Nazis..The acting by the Germans is better than Mitchum . He just wasnt much of an actor. He seems uninvolved and phones in his lines. The special effects look hokey compared to today. The naval component of this is the most interesting part. Commands,courses , procedures and etc. I have no idea if it is correct so.... In reality the sub would have administered the death blow from below. They would have machine gunned the US naval SURVIVORS. in the end. Rehabbing Germany was necessary given the political situation at the time vs. Russia.

Great old school WWII submarine movie. The U S of A saves the world singlehandedly again! Gene Coon used the premise for the Star Trek episode "Balance of Terror".

Storytelling at its best. Special effects don't get in the way. The only war movie I've seen where the story is driven by silent tension instead of gratuitous action
