Pretty standard WWI tale, but it's classed up and made better than average by director Howard Hawks, writer Dudley Nichols (with a reported dialogue polish by William Faulkner), director of photography James Wong Howe, and star John Garfield. Still, you've seen this story a hundred times before and the casual racism is pretty hard to watch at times, but despite all that, it remains a well made entertaining story, with loads of wartime action in the last reel.

Hawks' propaganda flick is a very strong piece of all-American cinema even if it is shallow in its focus on heroism as oppose to storyline.

The versatile Howard Hawks combines personal experience and knowing skills in directing this enjoyable WWII propaganda movie, which was nominated for four Oscars, winning one for editing.

A government-commissioned (I think) response to Pearl Harbor -- released, note the date, quite near that event. But there's no need to treat this as a historical document; it's a compelling film in its own right. Very starkly written and acted. Might be the quintessential Hawks film of its decade. Your Hawks-fan-o-meter couldn't be better tested than by the famous deathbed scene (scripted by Wm. Faulkner). If you're choked up, you're a Hawks lover. If you're smirking, you're a heathen.
