Cthulhu (2008)

A Seattle history professor, drawn back to his estranged family on the Oregon coast to execute his late mother's estate, is reacquainted with his best friend from childhood, with whom he has a long-awaited tryst. Caught in an accelerating series of events, he discovers aspects of his father's New Age cult which take on a dangerous and apocalyptic significance.

This movie is for gays. No, seriously, it was produced by a gay production company.

Despite the fact that this movie ended so abruptly, I enjoyed it and found myself enchanted with the way it handled Lovecraft's work. Though yes, it would be nice for an actual period-piece, and a big-budget, true-horror adaptation, this film is a gem all its own, and pays homage to the Master of Horror.

First: Weird, beautifully shot, atmospheric, absurd, creepy, essentially everything that makes a Lovecraftian story Lovecraftian. It's also a really cool allegory for how uncomfortable it is for a gay man to visit his religious family in the boonies.

Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Innsmouth looms largest in this offbeat film's influences, and while it can't be called faithful ... it does have an authentically doom-haunted atmosphere.
