Cthulhu (2008)

A Seattle history professor, drawn back to his estranged family on the Oregon coast to execute his late mother's estate, is reacquainted with his best friend from childhood, with whom he has a long-awaited tryst. Caught in an accelerating series of events, he discovers aspects of his father's New Age cult which take on a dangerous and apocalyptic significance.

Bare tittelen faar nok de fleste Lovecraft-fans til aa begynne aa sikle (selv om jeg kan banne paa at den het Kthulhu naar jeg foerste gang leste om den naar den dukket opp.) Cthulhu-mytoset har ikke faat noen virkelig god film enda. Ei ikke her heller. Det gode er at man godt kan like hvordan filmen forholder seg til ye olde ones paa en mer distansert maate enn veldig direkte. Og det er lett aa like hintene til Lovecrafts univers. Men filmen i seg selv holder ikke maal. Det uungaaelige mentale forfallet til enhver Lovecraft-helt virker bare paaklistret og filmen faller fort ifra hverandre. Saa jeg setter naa min lit til "The Call of Cthulhu" som kan virke som en bedre film. Vi faar se..

Stuart Gordon adapted the story more conventionally in 2001's "Dagon," and it remains the better bet for Lovecraft lovers.

Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Innsmouth looms largest in this offbeat film's influences, and while it can't be called faithful ... it does have an authentically doom-haunted atmosphere.

For the second time, im slack jawed by seing Tori Spelling being truly wird and comepelling in a movie that defies gender and challenges viewers with something really unexpected. She gets it, and makes it more. I always wanted to think sh really sucks but truth is she can be truly special sometimes. This movie is in a different class. Dont go in expecting Lovecraft mythos visuals. Just go in. It will get you somewhere strange. You wont regret it.

Points for being shot in the PNW but besides that tried to be too many things at once (terror,suspense, artsy, family drama, et cetera).
