Cthulhu (2008)

A Seattle history professor, drawn back to his estranged family on the Oregon coast to execute his late mother's estate, is reacquainted with his best friend from childhood, with whom he has a long-awaited tryst. Caught in an accelerating series of events, he discovers aspects of his father's New Age cult which take on a dangerous and apocalyptic significance.

Points for being shot in the PNW but besides that tried to be too many things at once (terror,suspense, artsy, family drama, et cetera).

It's best to watch Lovecraftian movies without any expectations, that way you can't be dissapointed if it's a not-so-good movie, and this movie isn't great, but it's also not bad. It's an interesting take on the "Shadow Over Innsmouth" story and I've enjoyed this movie. The movie feels very cheap from time to time and the amateurish acting isn't helping, but once you get past those problems, the story itself and the *sigh* Rivermouth folk are really interesting and while the ending leaves many things unanswered, it's still quite a ride. There is also quite a lot of scares in it, mainly in the last 30 minutes. All in all, a good Lovecraft movie that delivers an interesting story and atmosphere but also fails due to it's amateur actors and underdeveloped characters.

Who would have thought of a gay Lovecraftian film with (virtually) no monsters? Certainly not Lovecraft! Interesting treatment, using 'Innsmouth' as metaphor.

This little gem of a movie managed to capture the feel of Lovecraft's world in a way that I have seen practically nowhere else (and this is coming from a girl with the Yellow Sign tattooed on her back). I absolutely recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Lovecraft's vision. It is a haunting, darkly beautiful movie (and yes, Tori Spelling appears in it - she gives a surprisingly unsettling performance) which touches on many of Lovecraft's themes; the pull of "family" ties that we cannot escape,the sense that there is no escaping - no shutting the door of the universe once it has been opened and we have peeked through, the feeling of just how tenuous - how fragile - human life and sanity is, how easily the world could slip into chaos, blood, and fire if the stars ever align properly. LOVED this movie!

Posee una logradisima atmosfera enrarecida; acertada combinacion de paisajes naturales y edificios oniricamente fotografiados, que nos remiten a paisajes a lo Hooper y a esa extraÃ±a pelicula titulada "The Wickerman" (la de los 70's). Esa extragneza cotidiana, en que se convierte nuestro propio pasado y que nos aterra y que ya no sentimos como parte nuestra, es lo que presenta esta historia, cargada de un terror sutil e incomodo, que sube de tono y que es omnipresente, como el horror que esconde el mar, en sugerentes tomas, hasta el final donde intuimos mas que vemos, el inicio de una nueva era; la era de Cthulhu.
