In the late 1890s, the ambitious, innocent Carrie arrives in Chicago's South Side and stays with her nagging, dullish married sister. She then runs for help to traveling salesman Charles Drouet. She soon becomes his mistress, but falls in love with married restaurant manager George Hurstwood.

7.8 An excellent film challenging so many timeless issues that face us all. Lawrence Oliver is wonderful in his role as is Jenny Jones. The screen play is superb. The film bravely ends leaving the audience left darkly. But the directing itself by the renown William Wyler is the greatest achievement of the film. One remarkable scene after another with mood changes, lighting changes and fascinating cinematography. For a slow moving drama this film is nothing short of gripping. Wyler won three Oscars for best director (Ben Hur, The Best Years of Our Lives,Mrs. Miniver) and was nominated nine other times (Wuthering Heights, Roman Holiday).

Jennifer Jones is not the best actress, but Sir Larry is excellent. It's a bit over long, beautifully shot, quite tragic & touching. I was like "Noooooo!!!!!" at the end. I give it four sad faces!

1950s Hollywood production that strips Dreiser's novel of all of its sharp, biting satire and social commentary and gives his amoral heroine not only a conscience but a heart, while Hurstwood is redeemed with a final, noble act. What's worse, the final script is a turgid, cliched melodrama whose moral is best summed by Eddie Albert's character, "In this life, you gotta pay the piper. You gotta pay the piper."

69/100. For the most part it is a well done film, generally interesting story, good art direction and costumes. Good performances from both the leads. It does lack excitement and is a little bland. It lacks a solid supporting cast and is too gloomy.

WARNING - Do not watch if depressed. This is a terribly sad movie that will only help put you in the throes of depression. Despite this, it is one of my favourite films, if not my all time favourite.
