burt lancaster is truly inspired in this cynical classic

The whole thing bristles with rather superficial symbolism and even Jean Simmons's radiant, and in this case hearty, charm as an Aimee Macpherson figure.

Pretty compelling showcase for Lancaster as an athletic, charismatic huckster with a sinister edge (in other words, his ideal role).

Ends with a reference to the line, "...put away childish things." by which Mr. Gantry refers unspecifically to the Bible, or Christianity. Perhaps the writer could have applied this lesson to himself.

A religious nut with huckerish hellfire is exposed as a fraud - could be a televangelist of today but was a preacher from half a century ago. Plus ca change. A radical film which challenges the American obsession with organised religion in the modern age. Burt Lancaster is full of charisma in this - a real acting big gun the sort of which they don't make anymore.
