Café de Flore (2011)

Jacqueline is a young mother living in 1960s Paris with her disabled son Laurent. Abandoned by her husband, Jacqueline sacrifices everything to care for her son and vows to give Laurent a "normal" life full of happiness. Antoine, is a successful DJ in present day Montreal who seems to have it all: a thriving career, two beautiful daughters, partner Rose, with whom he is passionately in love. However, nothing is perfect and Antoine's ex-wife Carole remains devastated by their recent separation.

Cafe de Flore is a beautiful film. Vallee shows once again his remarkable ability to navigate human relationships that are touching and utterly real. He seamlessly weaves his two stories together, one of a mother and her devotion to her son, the other of a man who's life is perfect from the outside. The connections he creates are unexpected, but somehow fit easily together. Cafe de Flore has the possibly unique distinction of having both a solid and coherent story, while being wholly ambiguous and almost avant-garde in execution. The visuals are stunning as are the performances. It's not an easy film, but it is well worth the effort it requires as it is a film that will leave you breathless.

The French story is fascinating and beautifully acted, the French-Canadian one is romantic daytime TV drivel, and the links between them - mystic, metaphysical, musical - do not lead towards resonance or enlightenment.

If you don't like multi-layered films that make you think, make you want to watch them over again to follow the sugar trails of clues you realise they've been leaving, then you should probably stay away from CafÃ (C) de flore.
