Brighton Rock (1948)

Centring on the activities of a gang of assorted criminals and, in particular, their leader – a vicious young hoodlum known as "Pinkie" – the film's main thematic concern is the criminal underbelly evident in inter-war Brighton.

Attenborough is awesome as Pinkie, the Christian murderer who believes wholeheartedly in Hell, and possibly in Heaven. The dialogue is very old-fashioned now and the fight scene at the races looks lame but apart from these flaws, Brighton Rock is a top film.

Really terrific. Dickie Attenborough is mesmerising as the young hoodlum Pinkie Brown, who runs his ramshackle mob out of the seediest, shabbiest sidestreets of Brighton, and aspires to the Georgian grandeur of the Cosmopolitan Hotel. You can feel his resentment, envy and cold plotting in every glance. William Hartnell is terrific in support, and the two leading female roles are just as strongly played. Graham Greene's strong Catholic sensibilities come to the fore in the second half, but only in a way that makes you appreciate Attenborough's moody cruelty and icy persona even more.

It's dinky little Sir Richard Attenborough before he bored the arse of us with his Gandhi Oscar acceptance speeches playing criminal Pinkie in this classic take on the Graham Greene novel. I was slightly tickled by the disclaimer at the start that lets you know that none of what goes on in the flick represents what Brighton is now like (in 1947 that is)...yeah right! Anyhow, its well acted and whilst anything that's tagged as a classic is never quite how you would expect on a first watch it's still a great flick. The photography is good too, dig that ghost train ride and the editing.

Easily lost in the mists of time, but the best Gangster film I've ever seen!

Someone posted this movie in YouTube in 6 parts (luckily/unluckily), and I couldn't stop---had to finish it 'til the end. Reminds me of a long episode of Alfred Hitchcock presents. Sir Richard Attenborough was a revelation, seeing him only from Jurassic Park. Hermione Baddeley was a delight on screen and you couldn't wait to hear what tactless thing she'd say next. And Carol Marsh's wide-eyed innocence was a classic performance of the good old B&W films. T'was a good entertaining movie.
