'Breaking Upwards' explores a young, real-life New York couple who, four years in and battling codependency, decide to intricately strategize their own break up. Based on an actual experiment devised by director/actor Daryl Wein and actress Zoe Lister-Jones, the film loosely interprets a year in their lives exploring alternatives to monogamy, and the madness that ensues. An uncensored look at young love, lust, and the pangs of codependency, 'Breaking Upwards' follows its characters as they navigate each others' emotions across the city they love. The story is an old one, but it did have a few fresh moments ...

a believable snapshot of a modern, young, city-dwelling couple trying to help themselves get out of their routine, and working out their issues on independence and intimacy. watch out for the moms in this one :) i l liked how zoe's mom mentioned the guys on the jewish dating website were all octogenarians, and how daryl's mom played PI to suss out what was going on in zoe's life...

Happily, "Upwards" picks up immeasurably when three legit luminaries (Andrea Martin, Julie White, Peter Friedman) enter the picture as the couple's parents.

A different side of the relationship/breakup that we rarely see on the big screen. This is an amusing, realistic, and touching gem.

I was expecting this film to be so much more than what it was. It was an averagely indie film about twenty somethings and their relationship issues. I felt like the two leads really lacked good chemistry and never worked as a couple onscreen. We never saw them in their relationship at there best just the awkward and hilarious decent into breaking it off. I really wanted to like the film but it was definitely missing a key elements. I think a better story maybe I'm not sure what. But the overbearing parents are the scene stealers.
