Bottle Rocket (1996)

Upon his release from a mental hospital following a nervous breakdown, the directionless Anthony joins his friend Dignan, who seems far less sane than the former. Dignan has hatched a harebrained scheme for an as-yet-unspecified crime spree that somehow involves his former boss, the (supposedly) legendary Mr. Henry.

The start of a long line of classic films from director Wes Anderson. This and the others by him are the best films the Wilson brothers are a part of as well. For fans of the dry and subtle humor.

Everything about this film smacks of Wes's future work and as far as debut's go, it is an assured and wonderfully executed film. Having rewatched this recently, the characters are what endure beyond the simple story. Luke Wilson has bags of charm and is such a likeable presence, the relationship he strikes up with Inez at the motel has a childlike quality that is so sweet to watch. Then we have Owen Wilson who from the very first frame of the film infuses a fantastic quirky quality as Dignan. He is terrific as he attempts to acheive the aims of his 75 year plan. In addition to this, the supporting characters are equally good, especially Kumar, the best safecracker in the world, he is hysterically good. Visually, the film looks beautiful and the use of music once again fits the film like a glove. Overall, this is a film that has grown on me over the years and I can see it sticking with me for more to come.

Wes Anderson's first, and my first experience with him. Classic.
