Great family drama in it's simple and stylish depiction of very ordinary troubles in less ordinary circumstances for an extended French middle-class family. Great ensemble piece of acting, and a deft story-telling direction.

Olivier Assayas' film is as much a study of how ideals, value and valuables change over the span of a human life as it is a study of wealthy family. As the grown children of a recently deceased mother, they are forced to negotiate and settle on how to proceed. But no one can know what the future holds --- or what it will mean later in life.

Stylish French movie making at its best - well paced, carefully constructed and thoughtful. Makes you want to go smoke a few Gaulloises and drink a vinegary bottle of red... And the kids didn't burn the house down, either.

manages a sense of genuine poignancy that never becomes sticky or sentimental

Summer Hours is a good movie about the relationship between people and objects - and furthermore, how objects can interfere with relationships between people - and even furthermore, how meaningless objects can become to some (and very important to others) through the passing of generations.
