Slight, but enjoyably so. Through the usual backdrop of a globally shifting world, Assayas delivers a meditation on the intrinsic value of art, the everyday use of things, sentimentality, and the dissolution of the family. Existential without any navel gazing, and the characterizations are interesting enough to offset the obvious bourgeois underpinnings.

Quiet, but poignant, and hits home pretty hard.

Perfectly understated even when melodrama feels imminent... Charles Berling at his best... the most mature and consistent of Assayas' recent work. Maybe his best.

I love films which capture that atmosphere of late summer, lazy and sultry and shadowed by the coming autumn. So I found this very moving.

French films -- at least the few I've seen -- have an amazing quality that sets them apart from American ones. They have an intense focus on human beings -- their characters, their relationships, their emotions. The events are always depicted in the background, and are often mundane everyday happenings. That makes watching a French movie like L'Heure d'été a necessity after watching several American ones in a row.
