Maids (2001)

Five maids in São Paulo are observed in this episodic, impressionistic film. The women interact with each other, ride busses, work, and have longings: Rai for a husband, Créo for her lost daughter, Roxane for a career in modeling. Quitéria is naive, a gull for thieves. Cida has a husband and also a lover. While each woman gets what she wishes for (more or less), it doesn't always make things better.

Even if "Domesticas'' had succeeded as a comedy it only manages its laughs by making a mockery of its subjects. It ridicules them the way their rich employers do.

This film gives a lighter look at the lives of Brazilian maids, (in this particular film, 5 maids). Each of them has their own hopes and dreams, and this film explores how they attain them. However, after attaining them, it doesn't really make their lives better. This film could possibly be a drama, but it was told in a comedic way. Fernando Meirelles' direction is still, marvelous, and also Nando Olival's. I wonder, if this film omits the comedy style of making a movie, surely this must be a depressing film, lol. One of the characters in the film says this, "No child sets out to become a maid. But once there, are all other doors closed?". A fan of Brazilian movie? Watch it.

Meirelles debut as a filmmaker co-directing "Maids" with Nando Olival is superb! Their work is raw and incredibly entertaining. Definitely one of the best movies of 2001.
