The Element of Crime (1984)

Fisher, an ex-detective, decides to take one final case when a mysterious serial killer claims the lives of several young girls. Fisher, unable to find the culprit, turns to Osbourne, a writer who was once respected for his contributions to the field of criminology. Fisher begins to use Osbourne's technique, which involves empathizing with serial killers; however, as the detective becomes increasingly engrossed in this method, things take a disturbing turn.

A fantastic film, easily my favourite and the most underrated von Triers. Tarkovsky, Borges and Welles evoked in a sepia kaleidoscope of half glimpsed revelations.

Stylistically it's brilliant and there are several sequences which are visually awesome. However the film is almost unintelligable outside of its basic noir structure and this makes for a pretty unrewarding experience.

the greatest stream of consciousness film i have ever seen. actually, when i first saw it, my dvd player messed up and it was in b&w which added an amazing film noir feel to it. however, it is a great movie all around.

Von Trier is amazing in his first film. A noir film that leaves you amaze by the atmosphere, bizarre and dark, with a final that makes you wonder about the insanity of human mind.

The sepia tones make this film feel like watching a dream. All the characters are quite demented, and the dialogue is great. Has an interesting ending. Naration works well.
