a unique vision that kept my attention even if i was lost in what was going on. it allowed my imagination to wonder which i believe is very important in cinema and storytelling in general.

Stylistically it's brilliant and there are several sequences which are visually awesome. However the film is almost unintelligable outside of its basic noir structure and this makes for a pretty unrewarding experience.

Lars Von Trier's debut is a stylish and noir inspired world of crime and dystopia. The shades of blue and sepia get a little annoying, but the dialogue and creepy atmosphere is engaging. I had to read up to find out the theories, as the film's story is left up to interpretation. A solid watch, but perhaps too open for my taste as I was looking forward to the face off between cop and killer.

Early von Trier is much different than his later minimalist works, but is nonetheless riveting, engaging, and perplexing (not to mention funny at times).

A fantastic film, easily my favourite and the most underrated von Triers. Tarkovsky, Borges and Welles evoked in a sepia kaleidoscope of half glimpsed revelations.
