The Element of Crime (1984)

Fisher, an ex-detective, decides to take one final case when a mysterious serial killer claims the lives of several young girls. Fisher, unable to find the culprit, turns to Osbourne, a writer who was once respected for his contributions to the field of criminology. Fisher begins to use Osbourne's technique, which involves empathizing with serial killers; however, as the detective becomes increasingly engrossed in this method, things take a disturbing turn.

Hard to follow and even harder to understand this is one of the most visually engaging films I have ever seen.

I understand people orgasm over the cinematography, but I'm a story guy first and foremost and Element of Crime doesn't operate. Too much concern over style, and passing off poetic lines as supposed substance does not a great film make.

From the UK - first film in Lars' 'Europe trilogy', followed by "Epidemic" (1987) and "Zentropa" (1991).

Wanted to like it but failed to do so. Visually impressive but the narrative is confused and takes a lot of energy to get into.
