The Element of Crime (1984)

Fisher, an ex-detective, decides to take one final case when a mysterious serial killer claims the lives of several young girls. Fisher, unable to find the culprit, turns to Osbourne, a writer who was once respected for his contributions to the field of criminology. Fisher begins to use Osbourne's technique, which involves empathizing with serial killers; however, as the detective becomes increasingly engrossed in this method, things take a disturbing turn.

Lars von Trier desde su primer pelÃcula ya era mamon... pero entrega una pelicula compleja, fuerte y sobretodo muy atmosferica. Una idea muy original que en manos de casi cualquier otro habria caido en tonterias tipo CSI.

Crime's dreamlike tone and fantastic visuals make it impossible to forget, like an absurd nightmare that overshadows the following day. Even if Von Trier never made another movie, viewers would still watch and admire this debut.

As a person who normally thinks Von Trier works are brilliant, this one fell FAR short of what I was hoping for. In "Europa", the droning, hypnotic tone is played to mastery. In "The element of crime", it almost puts you to sleep. (In fact, the first time I tried watching this film, I actually DID fall asleep 20 minutes into it). The plot is so horrendously slow in developing that it's painful to watch. The amber tint makes the entire movie hard to watch, and hard to follow. I hate to put this into my "dislike" category, especially since I really WANTED to like it....but it's not something that I have any desire whatsoever to watch again.

The first great film to combine a sepia tone with film-noir shadows in order to conceive Europe as a post-apocalyptic barren land on the verge of complete anarchic disorder. Trier uses the archetypical detective with confronted emotions and priorities to highlight his vicious-circle story. Very underrated twist on the genres it treats, including the first use of the director's trademark: hypnosis. 97/100
